Qui di seguito l’appello di Pax Christi International firmato da molti leader religiosi mondiali
Il 22 gennaio 2021 entra in vigore il trattato per la messa la bando delle armi nucleari
Noi, leader della Chiesa cattolica di tutto il mondo, accogliamo con favore l’entrata in vigore il 22 gennaio 2021 del Trattato delle Nazioni Unite sulla proibizione delle armi nucleari.
Siamo incoraggiati dal fatto che la maggioranza degli Stati membri delle Nazioni Unite sostenga attivamente il nuovo trattato attraverso l’adozione, le firme e le ratifiche. È giusto che la Santa Sede sia stata tra i primi Stati ad aderire all’accordo nel 2017. Inoltre, i sondaggi dell’opinione pubblica mondiale dimostrano la convinzione globale che le armi nucleari debbano essere abolite. La peggiore di tutte le armi di distruzione di massa è stata da tempo giudicata immorale. Adesso è anche finalmente illegale.
Siamo preoccupati per il continuo rischio per l’umanità che potrebbero essere utilizzate armi nucleari e per le conseguenze catastrofiche che ne derivano. È incoraggiante che questo nuovo trattato si basi su un crescente corpo di ricerca sulle catastrofiche conseguenze umanitarie ed ecologiche di attacchi nucleari, test e incidenti. Due esempi che parlano a tutte le persone sono gli impatti sproporzionati delle radiazioni su donne e ragazze e i gravi effetti sulle comunità indigene le cui terre sono state utilizzate per test nucleari.
Noi sottoscritti sosteniamo la leadership che Papa Francesco sta dando al disarmo nucleare. Durante la sua storica visita alle città bombardate di Hiroshima e Nagasaki nel novembre 2019 il papa ha condannato sia l’uso che il possesso di armi nucleari da parte di qualsiasi Stato. La pace non può essere raggiunta attraverso “la minaccia dell’annientamento totale”, ha detto. Papa Francesco ha sollecitato il sostegno per “i principali strumenti giuridici internazionali di disarmo nucleare e non proliferazione, compreso il Trattato delle Nazioni Unite sulla proibizione delle armi nucleari”. Prima della sua visita, le Conferenze dei Vescovi Cattolici in Canada e Giappone hanno esortato i loro governi a firmare e ratificare il nuovo trattato
Come loro, alcuni di noi provengono da paesi alleati con una potenza nucleare o che dispongono di arsenali nucleari. Sicuramente, in quest’epoca di crescente interdipendenza e vulnerabilità globale, la nostra fede ci invita a cercare il bene comune e universale. “Siamo tutti salvati insieme o nessuno si salva”, dice la nuova enciclica del Papa Fratelli Tutti. “È possibile per noi essere aperti ai nostri vicini all’interno di una famiglia di nazioni?” chiede. La cooperazione internazionale è essenziale per affrontare la pandemia Covid-19, il cambiamento climatico, il divario tra ricchi e poveri e la minaccia universale delle armi nucleari.
Non importa da dove veniamo, ci uniamo ad esortare i governi a firmare e ratificare il Trattato delle Nazioni Unite sulla proibizione delle armi nucleari. Ringraziamo coloro che lo hanno già fatto e li esortiamo a invitare anche altri paesi ad aderire al trattato.
Invitiamo i colleghi leader della chiesa a discutere e deliberare sul ruolo significativo che la chiesa può svolgere nel costruire il sostegno per questa nuova norma internazionale contro le armi nucleari. È particolarmente importante per le conferenze episcopali nazionali e regionali, nonché per le istituzioni e le fondazioni cattoliche, verificare se i fondi relativi alla chiesa vengono investiti in società e banche coinvolte nella produzione di armi nucleari. In tal caso, intraprendere azioni correttive ponendo fine ai rapporti di finanziamento esistenti e cercare modi per il disinvestimento.
Crediamo che il dono della pace di Dio sia all’opera per scoraggiare la guerra e superare la violenza. Pertanto, in questo giorno storico, ci congratuliamo con i membri della Chiesa cattolica che per decenni sono stati in prima linea nei movimenti di base per opporsi alle armi nucleari e ai movimenti per la pace cattolici che fanno parte della Campagna internazionale per l’abolizione delle armi nucleari, vincitrice del Premio Nobel (ICAN )
